How to Use a Golf Rangefinder

A laser is simple once someone shows you the trick to locking onto the flag. Here's how to get a clean, accurate yardage every time — even with a less-than-steady hand.

A laser rangefinder is genuinely simple to use — point it at the flag, press the button, read the number — but a couple of small techniques make the difference between a confident yardage and a frustrating hunt for the pin. Here’s how to get a clean reading every time, including the trick to locking onto the flag and how to stay steady if your hands aren’t.

The basic sequence

  1. Bring the rangefinder to your eye and look through the eyepiece — you’ll see a crosshair or aiming circle.
  2. Rest your elbows against your body or the cart to steady your arms.
  3. Place the crosshair on the flag and press and hold the button to fire the laser.
  4. Hold steady until the device confirms the lock — usually a pulse, vibration or a locked-on symbol.
  5. Read the yardage, then choose your club.

The trick to locking onto the flag

The one thing that trips people up is catching the trees or hillside behind the green instead of the flag. Two habits fix it. First, sweepthe crosshair slowly across the flag rather than holding it dead still — most rangefinders lock onto the nearest object as you pass over it, and the confirming pulse tells you it grabbed the pin. Second, use flag-lock(sometimes called pin-seeker or first-target priority) if your device has it: it prioritizes the closer, thinner target — the flag — over the background. Once you feel the pulse, the number is the flag.

Steadying a shaky hand

If your hands aren’t steady, the view wobbles and the crosshair won’t settle. Rest your elbows on your body or the cart rail, take a breath and fire on the exhale, and sweep across the flag so a moment of steadiness is enough to catch it. Should you turn on slope?

Slope adjusts the reading for uphill and downhill shots, giving a “plays-like” distance that’s genuinely helpful for club selection. The catch: it must be switched off to be tournament-legal, so devices with slope have an off switch. If you never play competitively, leave slope on; if you do, learn where the switch is. Range a known target on the practice ground first — a 150-yard marker, say — to learn the feel of the lock before it matters on the course. Two minutes of practice and it becomes second nature.
