Our method
How we pick
This is the most important page on the site, because it is where we show our working. We don’t run a test lab. Here is what we do instead — every step of it, so you can check us.
The short version. We compile published manufacturer specifications, do the swing-speed and compression math, cross-read owner manuals, cite third-party research by name, and check live prices. We have not hit, worn or lab-tested any of this gear, and we say so on every page. Where somebody has genuinely measured it, we link them.
What we do
- Compile the published specs. Shaft weight and flex, loft options, head volume, grip core and diameter, ball compression, cart weight and fold, shoe construction — the numbers manufacturers publish and most senior-gear pages never show. We put them side by side in tables so you can compare like with like.
- Do the arithmetic. We compute swing-speed to shaft-flex bands and match ball compression to swing speed, using our swing-speed & shaft flex chart and ball compression chart. This is math, not measurement — but it’s the same math a good club-fitter starts from.
- Cross-read the manuals and cite the research. Where we make a claim about the body — arthritis, carrying versus pushing, footing — we cite a named authority such as the Arthritis Foundation and link it, rather than stating it in our own voice.
- Check the live price.Every price on the site comes from Amazon’s API and is stamped with the day we checked it. If our data is more than 48 hours old, the number disappears and the button reads “Check price” — we never show a figure that has gone stale.
What we don’t do
- We don’t hit the clubs, wear the shoes on a course, or run a launch monitor.
- We don’t own the products or accept free samples from manufacturers.
- We don’t take payment for placement, and no brand sees our copy before you do.
- We don’t invent prices, ratings, review counts, or specifications. Ever.
How a pick gets made
For each category we decide the two or three specs that actually matter to a senior golfer — for a driver, that’s launch, forgiveness and weight; for a ball, compression; for a grip, diameter and softness. We score each product against a small set of category-relevant metrics, publish those per-metric scores on the product card, and rank on the total. Those scores are our judgments from documented research — they are not lab measurements, and we label them that way.
Every roundup carries a genuine “skip this” — a product we recommend against, and why. Recommending against something is the cheapest honest signal available, and almost nobody in the senior-gear space does it.
When we defer to someone else
Sometimes measured performance genuinely decides a question and published specs can’t. When that happens we say so and link the people who did the measuring — including sites with real test labs whose data is better than any spec sheet. Pointing you to a competitor’s superior testing isn’t a weakness; it’s the clearest possible sign that we’re not pretending.
How often we re-check
- Prices: live, every render, behind the 48-hour freshness gate above.
- Spec tables:re-verified against manufacturer sheets quarterly, and re-stamped only when we’ve actually re-checked — a false “last verified” date is worse than none.
- Product line-ups: reviewed twice a year and on major new releases or discontinuations.
- Health guidance: re-checked annually against the cited authority.
Found a mistake?
Tell us. If a spec is wrong, a product has been discontinued, or you think a ranking is off, get in touch— corrections are exactly the kind of mail we want, and we’ll fix and re-stamp the page.
