The Cut
Mowers
The one tool you use every week, and the one where lawn size decides the right answer completely. Push, self-propelled, battery or robot — we rank by the lawn you have, not by the spec sheet.
We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes our rankings — and we'll tell you when the cheaper bag or machine is the better buy. How this works.
A mower is the one piece of lawn equipment you use every single week for thirty weeks a year, and the one where almost everybody buys the wrong size. Deck width, drive type and power source are the three decisions, and all three of them are answered by the same question: how big is the lawn, and what shape is it?
Nothing else on this page matters as much as that. A 21-inch self-propelled mower is a superb machine and completely wasted on 2,000 square feet of flat front lawn; a 16-inch battery push mower is excellent value and will make a half acre feel like a punishment. We publish the deck width, the voltage or engine displacement, and whatever runtime figure the manufacturer is willing to put in writing — then do the arithmetic on how many passes your lawn actually takes.
Deck width is the spec that decides your Saturday
Deck width sets how many passes a lawn needs, and passes are what cost you time. Going from a 16-inch deck to a 21-inch deck cuts roughly a quarter off the number of lengths you walk, every single cut, forever. That is the single highest-leverage number on the box. The counter-argument is real too: a wide deck cannot turn inside a flowerbed and will not fit through a 30-inch side gate. Measure the gate before you measure the lawn. The full arithmetic, by lawn size, is in what size lawn mower do I need.
Self-propelled is about slope, not about strength
People talk about self-propelled drive as a convenience for anyone who finds pushing hard work. The better way to think about it is gradient. On flat ground a 21-inch push mower is genuinely fine. On any slope worth the name, a driven wheel is the difference between mowing the lawn and fighting it — and a mower full of wet clippings is heavier than anyone expects. Our best self-propelled lawn mower roundup ranks on drive type and deck width together, because the two specs only make sense as a pair.
Battery has won on everything except acreage
For a lawn up to about half an acre the argument is effectively over: battery mowers start on a trigger, need no oil changes, no filters, no fuel stabiliser and no winterising, and the better ones cut as well as a comparable gas mower. Past half an acre the calculation changes, because a flat battery takes an hour to fix and a dry tank takes two minutes. The honest cost comparison, including what you stop spending on servicing, is in electric vs gas lawn mower, and the cordless shortlist is in best electric lawn mower.
Batteries are a platform decision, not a mower decision
This is the part most buying guides skip. When you buy a cordless mower you are also choosing which battery your trimmer, your blower and your edger will run on for the next decade. The mower is the expensive entry ticket to a platform; the saving comes later, when the next three tools arrive as bare tools. That is why our string trimmer and leaf blower rankings keep naming the same handful of platforms. Pick the platform, then pick the tools.
Robot mowers are now a sensible purchase, with one condition
Robot mowers stopped being a novelty when wire-free navigation arrived. You no longer bury a perimeter cable around the lawn; the machine positions itself with satellite RTK, optical vision or LiDAR, and you draw the boundary in an app. The condition is site-dependent: RTK needs a clear view of the sky, so a lawn under a dense canopy wants a LiDAR or vision-based machine instead. Rated area is a hard ceiling, not a suggestion. Our best robot lawn mower roundup sorts them by rated area first and navigation type second, because those are the two specs that decide whether one will work on your lawn at all.
Mowing height does more for a lawn than any product
One free thing, before you spend anything: raise your cutting height. Taller grass shades its own soil, keeps roots cooler, holds moisture longer and outcompetes weed seedlings that need light to germinate. Scalping a lawn short in July is the most common self-inflicted lawn injury there is, and it is also why people then go shopping for fertilizer and grass seed to fix a problem the mower caused. A mower with plenty of height settings is worth more than a mower with a big number on the engine.
Where to start
If you want one answer, start with the best lawn mower — it covers the comfortable majority of suburban lawns. If your lawn is small, the best lawn mower for small yards list is tuned for it and will save you money. If it is over about three quarters of an acre, stop reading here and go to riding and zero-turn mowers instead — no walk-behind is the right tool for that lawn.
