The Edges
Trimmers, Edgers & Blowers
A mown lawn with ragged edges still looks unfinished. These are the three tools that do the last ten percent of the job — and the ten percent everyone notices.

A mown lawn with ragged edges still looks unfinished, and a tidy lawn buried under leaves looks neglected. These are the three tools that do the last ten percent of lawn care — and the ten percent everyone actually notices from the street.
This is also the category where published specifications are least honest, so it is worth understanding what the numbers mean before you compare them. Two figures get quoted for blowers and they measure different things. For trimmers, the number that matters is not power at all. And for all three tools, the battery platform you are already on usually matters more than any individual model's spec advantage.
CFM moves leaves. MPH only lifts them.
This is the single most useful thing to know about buying a blower. MPH is air speed at the nozzle, and high speed is what unsticks a wet leaf matted into grass. CFMis the volume of air moved per minute, and volume is what actually carries a pile of leaves across a lawn. A blower with high MPH and low CFM feels impressive and moves very little. If a manufacturer publishes only MPH, that absence is informative, and we say so on the product rather than estimating a figure — the ranking is in best leaf blower.
On trimmers, line handling beats power
Almost nobody's string trimmer problem is insufficient power. The problems are the line running out mid-job, bumping the head on the ground to feed more and breaking the head doing it, and the twenty minutes of swearing involved in rewinding a spool. That is why our trimmer roundup ranks mechanisms like push-button reloading and automatic line feed above raw voltage. Cutting swath is the other number that matters, because it sets how many passes a long fence line takes — the same arithmetic as mower deck width, at a smaller scale.
A trimmer held sideways is not an edger
Plenty of trimmers rotate to cut a vertical edge, and for occasional work that is fine. But a wheeled edger with a depth stop cuts the same depth for the whole run, and consistent depth is the entire reason a professional-looking edge looks professional. Freehand edging with a trimmer produces a scalloped line, because your arm is not a depth gauge. The difference is covered in best lawn edger.
Battery platform is the decision underneath all three
These three tools are where a cordless platform pays you back. The mower is the expensive entry ticket; the trimmer, blower and edger are the cheap bare tools afterwards. EGO 56V and Greenworks 40V/60V/80V have the broadest homeowner ranges; CRAFTSMAN V20 and Worx PowerShare are broad but lower-voltage; Milwaukee M18 is a trade platform with outdoor tools attached. Whichever you are already on is usually the right answer, and it is worth more than any single tool's edge on paper.
Corded still wins one argument, and it is a real one
For leaf vacuuming and mulching, unlimited runtime genuinely matters, because autumn clearing is a long job rather than a short one. A corded blower-vac also tends to be a third of the price of a cordless equivalent. The trade is cord management around trees and beds, and that trade gets worse the bigger the property. On a drive and a patio it is nothing; on a quarter acre it is why the tool stays in the garage.
Mulching leaves is better than bagging them
Worth a paragraph because it saves work and money. A blower-vac with a mulching impeller shreds leaves down dramatically, so a bag holds many times more leaf. Shredded leaf is also genuinely good material — it composts fast and makes excellent mulch for beds. The alternative is to raise your mower and mulch light leaf fall straight into the lawn, which returns the nutrient and saves the job entirely. Neither approach needs you to buy more bags.
Where to start
Start with best string trimmer — it is the tool you will use every week. Then best leaf blower for the whole category including gas and corded, or best cordless leaf blower if you already know you want battery. And if your lawn's edges are what is bothering you, best lawn edger is the page.
