The Best Lawn Mower for Small Yards

Narrow-deck mowers ranked for tight turns, easy storage and the gates a 21-inch mower will not fit through.

We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes our rankings — and we'll tell you when the cheaper bag or machine is the better buy. How this works.

For a small lawn the best mower is a narrow one, and our pick is the Greenworks 40V 17" Push Mower. Seventeen inches turns inside beds and paths a 21-inch deck has to reverse out of, it is light enough to carry down steps, and it is the cheapest route to a cordless mower with the battery in the box. If you want more battery and a slightly wider cut, the SKIL PWR CORE 40 ships a 6.0 Ah pack on a 20-inch deck. If the lawn is genuinely tiny and near an outlet, the corded LawnMaster costs less again and never needs charging.

Small-yard mowing is the one case where the usual advice inverts. Everywhere else, a wider deck saves you time; here, it costs you time, because on a small complex lawn the limiting factor is turning and manoeuvring rather than straight-line coverage. Add in storage — a small lawn usually comes with a small shed — and the gate problem, and the case for a narrow deck is overwhelming.

We have not mown a small lawn with any of these. The ranking reads off published deck width, battery capacity, amperage and format, and weights the specs that matter at this scale: narrowness, weight and whether the thing will hang on a wall. See how we pick. If your lawn is bigger than you think — and people routinely underestimate — check what size lawn mower do I need before buying narrow.

Pros

  • A narrow deck turns inside beds and paths that a full-size mower has to reverse out of
  • Light enough to carry down steps, which no 21-inch mower is
  • The cheapest route to a cordless mower with the battery included

Cons

  • 17 inches means noticeably more passes on anything over about 3,000 square feet
  • 40V and a small deck is not a combination for long or wet grass

Skip this if…

…your lawn is over about 4,000 square feet. The extra four inches of deck on the 21-inch mowers above saves you roughly a fifth of the passes, every week, forever.

Pros

  • 6.0 Ah included is more stored energy than kits costing half again as much
  • Brushless motor, which is the spec that separates a mower that lasts from one that does not
  • 20 inches is the sweet spot for lots with gates and tight side passages

Cons

  • SKIL's PWR CORE 40 range is narrower than EGO's or Greenworks', so the platform buys you less
  • Push only

Skip this if…

…you want one battery system across mower, trimmer and blower. SKIL's 40V tool range is the thinnest here, and platform breadth is most of the reason to go cordless at all.

Pros

Cons

Pros

Pros

Cons

  • Will not cut grass that has gone long — you have to mow weekly or it rides over the top

How to choose a mower for a small lawn

Measure the narrowest gate, not the lawn. On a small property the binding constraint is usually access. A 21-inch mower needs about 24 inches of clear opening; a 17-inch mower needs about 20. If your side passage is tight, that single measurement makes the decision for you.

Count the obstacles. A small lawn with four beds, a tree and a washing line pole is mostly turns. Narrow decks turn tighter and let you mow around things in one pass instead of three. If your small lawn is a plain rectangle, you can ignore this and buy on width.

Think about where it lives. A small garden usually means a small shed or a shared hallway. Weight and folded footprint are real specifications here, and they are why the 17-inch Greenworks and the reel mower rank well while a full-size self-propelled mower does not.

Consider a reel mower, seriously, with one condition. The Great States reel mower scissor-cuts rather than tearing, which genuinely leaves a cleaner leaf tip, costs nothing to run and makes no noise. The condition is discipline: it will not cut grass that has gone long, so you must mow weekly. On a small, flat, regularly-cut lawn it is a lovely thing. On a bumpy lawn you mow when you remember, it is a bad buy.

A robot is a real option at this size. The LawnMaster OcuMow is rated for 1,000 to 2,000 square feet and costs less than half of most robot mowers. For a small front lawn you are tired of thinking about, it is the cheapest way to stop thinking about it — see best robot lawn mower for the whole category.

Do not buy self-propelled. On a small lawn a driven wheel adds weight and cost to a job that takes fifteen minutes, and the extra weight makes storage and steps worse. Our self-propelled roundup exists for lawns with slope and size, which this is not.

Who should skip these

Skip this list if your lawn is over about 5,000 square feet. The passes add up quickly and you will spend every Saturday wishing you had four more inches of deck — go to the best lawn mower instead.

Skip the reel mower unless you will genuinely mow weekly and your ground is level. And skip the corded LawnMaster if the lawn is at the back of the house with no outdoor socket — running an extension through a window every week is how a mower becomes a thing you avoid.

How we picked this

We haven't hit this gear — and we say so

We compiled the published manufacturer specifications — shaft weight and flex, loft, deck width, blower CFM, fertilizer NPK, seed species — did the deck-width and nitrogen arithmetic, cross-read the owner manuals, and scored each pick against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — they are notlab measurements we took, because we don't have a lab and we're not going to pretend we do. Where somebody has genuinely measured this, we link them. You can check every number we publish.

Questions

Frequently asked

What size mower do I need for a small yard?
Under about 4,000 square feet, a 16–17 inch deck is usually right, and the tighter turning is worth more than straight-line coverage on a lawn full of beds. Check your narrowest gate too: a 17-inch mower needs roughly 20 inches of clearance.
Are reel mowers any good?
On a small, level lawn mown weekly, genuinely yes — a reel scissor-cuts rather than tearing, costs nothing to run and makes no noise. It will not cut grass that has got long, and it dislikes uneven ground, so it rewards discipline.
Is a robot mower worth it on a small lawn?
It can be, and it is cheaper than people expect: the LawnMaster OcuMow is rated for 1,000–2,000 square feet at well under half the price of most robot mowers. The full category is in best robot lawn mower.
Do I need self-propelled drive on a small lawn?
No. On fifteen minutes of flat mowing a driven wheel adds weight, cost and storage bulk for no real benefit. Save the money unless the small lawn happens to be on a genuine slope.
